Osprey announced today their continued support for Nimdai Purja, who burst into the limelight in 2019 for “Project Possible,” during which he climbed the world’s 14 highest mountains in an astounding six months and six days. The prior record was eight years! This time, Osprey backs Purja in an attempt to claim the 8,611-meter high peak of K2 during the incredibly inhospitable winter conditions. Purja arrived at base camp on New Year’s Eve and has been biding his time, waiting for a weather window to start fixing lines to Camp 4.
K2 – Savage, Even in All Seasons
K2 is the only peak that remains unclimbed during the winter season. The second highest mountain in the world claims the life of one out of every four climbers that reach the summit. Winter conditions greatly expand the dangers and challenges of an already deadly peak. But Purja remains upbeat for his Winter K2 Project. “I’m thrilled and grateful to once again be partnering with Osprey for my upcoming K2 Winter project,” said Nimsdai. “The whole team at Osprey has been incredibly supportive throughout my climbing journey so far. I’ll be representing them with pride on my next big mountaineering expedition – making the Impossible Possible together.”
A Special Osprey Pack
Purja will be hauling critical gear up the steep slopes with Osprey’s latest innovation – The Talon Pro. The brand from Cortez, Colorado, pulled out all the stops, using ultra-high-molecular-weight-polyethylene (UHMWPE) ripstop and 100d nylon minimize weight while maintaining abrasion resistance. And a new injection molded and die-cut foam AirScape back panel allows vertical flex but keeps the horizontal plane flat for efficient and comfortable load transfer. An Osprey BioStretch harness and continuous wrap hip belt round out this flyweight pack destined for the world’s high places. The pack will be available this spring season at your favorite retailer.
Potentially Making History Again
“Last year, we saw climbing history by Nimsdai,” said Jonathan Petty, Managing Director, Osprey Europe. “We are proud once more to support this mountaineer on his toughest challenge yet: K2 Winter. This climb is one of the greatest mountaineering challenges, but one that Nimsdai, with his sheer determination, mental and physical strength can accomplish.”
